In every community, there are people who are homeless. Many Downriver are currently finding shelter at the Taylor Church of Nazarene, a building on Eureka Road. All too often, we read about animals being abused, so it’s heartwarming to hear of a 7-year-old girl who put the homeless animals before herself. Meet 7-year-old Gianna Lagina of Grosse Ile.
Gianna celebrated her birthday in November, but requested her friends not bring her a gift but rather bring a gift for the homeless animals at the Grosse Ile Animal Shelter. In exchange for gifts to the animals, Gianna created a pet adoption center at her party. Each partygoer received a stuffed animal of his or her choice, an adoption certificate, and a small box to keep the stuffed animal safe. [Read more…]

A “Harvest for the Homeless” fundraiser will be held Friday, Sept. 30, at the Orlando Familia Banquet Center located at 15001 Sibley Road, Riverview, to raise money to help Christnet complete renovations on its new home base.
Christnet has been a partner with the Downriver church communities for more than 20 years, providing services to the homeless such as food, shelter, ID assistance, training and advocacy. This is done through a seasonal rotating nighttime shelter and year-round daytime center.
This past season, the host churches of the nighttime shelter and year round daytime shelter housed a total of 194 guests, providing 6,148 safe nights of housing from Oct. 10, 2015 until May 29, 2016. Among the guests, the group hosted four families with a total of six children and five adults. The host churches also provided 18,444 meals to the guests. [Read more…]
