This September will see the return of the “Girls Learn to Play” under longtime hockey coach Tom Bates. The program will run from September until mid-March every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Taylor Sportsplex.
Bates’ program is aimed at young girls ages 4-10 and will focus on teaching the basics of the game as well as improving their skating. Last year’s program was compiled of 32 girls; the most ever in the program and Bates is thrilled with the future of possibilities.
Bates himself has been around the sport his fair share of years and has two daughters who are longtime veterans of the sport. His oldest, Kalli, is 23 and is currently a University of Michigan Women’s Hockey assistant coach. Prior to that, she played club hockey at University of Michigan and played on the USA Women’s National team where she won a bronze medal at the World University Games in 2013. [Read more…]
