The International Wildlife Refuge Alliance, the “friends” organization for the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, recently made its Patronicity goal, enabling them to receive $50,000 in match funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. After a two-month, online campaign which ended Aug. 31, the funds needed to complete the school ship dock and fishing pier at the Refuge Gateway in Trenton were raised.
This project is a strategic move to model sustainability, help attract and retain employees for businesses, enhance community pride, and help create a sense of outdoor wonder in youth of metropolitan Detroit in an effort to help develop them as conservationists and sustainability entrepreneurs. We believe that the Refuge Gateway will become a destination of choice in southeast Michigan that will eventually attract hundreds of thousands of annual visitors.
