As with any other of the 67 years of the Roar on the River, this year’s incarnation of the event promises to offer something for the whole family. With a recent addition to the festivities, that family focus will be even stronger.
Henry Ford Health System will be sponsoring Community Picnic Day from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, under the large tent; an event that will offer a free hot dog, healthy snack and water to the first 500 attendees.
Ronnie Ruelle, one of the Roar’s key organizers, noted that the addition of this event is meant to inspire a healthy lifestyle, as the healthy snack will be given in conjunction with a group walk that is sponsored by Molina Healthcare.
“It’s the first year that we’re having it and we just really want to do something that would join the entertainment before the races. I think it’ll be a good way to get people engaged with the event, while also providing some healthy food.” Ruelle said.
In the process of organizing the event, Ruelle noted the helpfulness of the snack sponsor — Walmart of Woodhaven — in providing the group with a vast array of options in terms of food.
“We haven’t nailed down what the snacks will be, but Walmart of Woodhaven has been really helpful in what they’ve offered,” Ruelle said. “They have said that whatever we need, they will be able to donate whether it’s oranges, raisins, pretzels or whatever we end up choosing.”
While they will be providing food and organizing a healthy walk around the premises of the Roar on the River, the overall goal of the picnic is to inspire healthy life choices.
“We’re going to have a healthy walk and encourage healthy lifestyles for kids of all ages. Along with those, we’re going to have some games that will encourage physical activity.”
