Happy New Year, Everyone!
We say “good-bye” to the year 2017 and “hello” to 2018. May it be a year of good health, happiness, and prosperity, looking forward with optimism, leaving pessimism behind; the chance for a new beginning in all things — faith, hope, love, charity, peace and renewal in spirit.
Recreation opportunities for all ages:
Community Skating and Hockey Rink at Water’s Edge Complex: Plan your skating party or hockey rental, also offering open skate and hockey play. Rink closes daily at 11 p.m. Check grosseile.com for updates.
Beginning and Continuing Yoga: Tuesdays, Jan. 9-Feb. 13, from 2-3:30 p.m. Centennial Farm Activity Room. Helps physically, mentally, spiritually. Classes include postures for all levels, breathing practices, and relaxation techniques. Register online at grosseilerecreation.com
Social Dance: Wednesdays, Jan. 10-Feb. 28, from 7:45-8:45 p.m. at Centennial Farm Activity Room. This course will cover the basics in Fox Trot, Waltz, Swiss and Latin. You will learn to move in time with your partner. Register online at grosseilerecreation.com.
Sledding Winter Olympics: Saturday, Jan. 13, from 1-3 p.m. at Commerce Park (across from the Grosse Ile airport). Family and friends compete in teams of three to four in a series of snow games such as Sled Bowling, Sled Racing, Snowman Building and Obstacle Courses to see who can get the gold!
Sports for preschool Sampler: ages 3-5, Tuesday, Jan. 16-Feb. 6, from 4:15-5 p.m. at Centennial Farm Activity Room. The goal of the program is to increase the child’s coordination of large motor skills and spark their interest in each sport.
Little Ninjas Karate: ages 4-5, Wednesday, Jan. 31-March 14, from 6-6:30 p.m. at the Centennial Farm Activity Room. This is an introductory karate class that focuses on teaching eight important main life skills: focus, memory, teamwork, discipline, self-control, fitness, balance and coordination.
Kids Power Karate: ages 6-12, Wednesday, Jan. 31-March 14, from 6:45-7:30 p.m. at the Centennial Farm Activity Room. PREVIOUS MARTIAL ARTS STUDENTS, REGARDLESS OF RANK OR AGE, SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS TO BE ASSESSED AND ASSIGNED THE PROPER RANK IN TANG SOO DO. The Kids Power Karate Program offers traditional martial arts training to children ages 6 through 12 and emphasizes self-defense, physical fitness, conflict resolution, teamwork and anti-kidnapping techniques.
Tiny Tigers: ages 2-3, Thursday, Feb. 1-March 15, from 4:30-5 p.m. at the Centennial Farm Activity Room. This is a parent and child interactive class designed specifically for this age group. Your child will benefit from physical activity, coordination drills, discipline and social interaction with other children of their own age in an activity setting.
Color Belt Continuation Class: ages 6 and over, Thursday, Feb. 1-March 15, from 6:45-7:30 p.m. at the Centennial Farm Activity Room. Continuation of traditional martial arts training for those students who have achieved a color belt rank in the Kids Power Karate program. Teaches traditional Tang Soo Do techniques and self-defense at a rank appropriate level
Advanced Ninjas Continuation Class for ages 4-5, Thursday, Feb. 1-March 15, from 6-6:30 p.m. at the Centennial Farm Activity Room. Continuation of our Little Ninjas Karate class. Prerequisite: completion of the Little Ninjas Karate class. Questions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
High Intensity Training: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Jan. 17-March 7 from 8-9 a.m. at Centennial Farm Activity Room; Cardio, Pilates, weight training, yoga, strength training and boot camp. Weights, mat, towel and water bottle required. Men and women welcome. Now offering a Tuesday-Thursday session. If you take both session Monday-Wednesday-Friday and Tuesday-Thursday in consecutive sessions, save 10 percent.
Senior Fitness: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Jan. 17-March 7, from 9:15-10 a.m. at the Centennial Farm Activity Room. Senior Strength Training is a fun-filled 45-minute class that stresses flexibility, strength and toning. Join us for an exercise class that is for beginners. Now offering a Tuesday-Thursday session. If you take both session Monday-Wednesday-Friday and Tuesday-Thursday in consecutive sessions, save 10 percent.
Cardio-Kick-Fit: Tuesday, Jan. 30-March 6, from 6-6:30 p.m. at Centennial Farm Activity Room. Cardio Kickfit is a 30-minute circuit style fitness class that is great for cardio fitness, self-defense, coordination and muscle toning. All fitness levels are welcome. This course is designed for men and women ages 15 and over. Or join our 6:30-7 p.m. class.
Cardio Drumming: Thursdays, Feb. 1-March 15 from 10-10:45 a.m. at Centennial Farm Activity Room. Cardio Drumming is a fun energetic workout that combines dance, rhythm and drumming; great for teens and adults of all ages. All fitness levels are welcome.
Tennis After School at Meridian School starting Tuesdays, Feb. 6, for grades 3-5 and Parke Lane School starting Monday, Feb. 5, for grades K-2. All equipment is provided. Have fun while learning a great game. Register at grosseilerecreation.com
Daddy Daughter Dance: Friday, Feb. 2 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Middle School Café. Always a sell-out event. Learn new dances, enjoy pizza and snacks. Take home a keepsake photograph. Register at grosseilerecreation.com. Register early!
Mother and Son Bowling: Friday, Feb. 23 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Woodhaven Lanes. Join us for a night of friendly competition and teamwork. You will receive bowling time, shoe rental, hot dog and pop. Register early!
First Annual Island Winterfest: Saturday, Feb. 24, from 6-9 p.m. at Water’s Edge. Includes: chili cook-off, bonfire, ice skating, snow sports, snowman contest and much more! Free Event!
