Passion, determination and hard work have paved the way for success so far for the 2017 Grosse Ile volleyball team. The Red Devils may have a 14-11 record, but a tough tournament schedule does not reflect their current record of play.
Most recently, the team finished second at the Carlson and Wyandotte tournaments. In the league, the Red Devils are a perfect 4-0 and sit as the only undefeated team in the Huron League after knocking off league rival St. Mary Catholic Central in five sets last week. They took on league rival Riverview in a double header on Sept. 27.
Key returnees to veteran Coach Amanda Sammons team include seniors Kyra Stafford (Libero), Kaitlyn Clum (OH), Hannah Burlin (DS), Libby Frucci (MB), Bella Munoz (DS) and Hannah Champnella (DS) and junior Nicole Parvin (OH).
Key newcomers to this year’s squad include juniors Liz Daly (S) and Maddi Smeddo (MB) and freshman Meg Balough.
Regrouping was a challenge this year and Sammons said her team has done well with it so far.
“I lost nine players last year which most played on my team since their sophomore year,” she said. “There were major roles that needed filling. This group has done a fabulous job and are determined to have a winning season.”
This year, the team is working under the motto ‘some wish for it, we work for it’ and Sammons said it’s working.
“This is one of the hardest working groups of kids I have coached at Grosse Ile. We are a tough serving team and our serve receive and defense is our strengths. This team plays with a lot of passion and determination.”
