With the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays now upon us, most people find themselves busier than ever. There are many opportunities available to help others and to also have a pleasant personal holiday.
Most of the churches have extra services, events and many collect items to send to less fortunate communities. There is often a church Christmas tree with several envelopes with age, gender, and size of people needing clothing. Grocery bags can be filled with food to donate.
Musicians will have extra rehearsals for bell choirs and voice choirs and instruments. Each of the Grosse Ile five churches have up-to-date computer information about services, volunteer opportunities and all welcome newcomers.
By the time you read this, the Saint James Episcopal Church will have had its very popular and fun Greens Market. It is an enjoyable place to volunteer, shop and meet people. Proceeds go to several very worthy causes.
Older people may need a ride to go shopping or attend local events. Outdoor decorations can be a challenge to senior citizens. Some senior citizens do not have family nearby. Perhaps a work exchange would help. Pet care and house watching would be a very welcome volunteer action for a friend or neighbor who will be away from home for a few days. Some pet care volunteers become so attached to a pet they don’t want to give them back…it happens!
Food distribution pantries and holiday community meals in some neighborhoods have many volunteers that have learned to sign up well ahead of the date. Some return year after year to help and show new volunteers the routine. Most are still able to have their personal holiday. If you have canned food that you won’t be using, it could be donated to a food pantry.
Crafts such as knitting, crocheting and sewing are a fun way to provide personal handmade gifts. Many older women find making useful items for others brings fulfillment. Sweaters, scarves, and mittens are welcome this time of year. Craft items can be auctioned at events to bring in donations. Quilts are a nice prize for the lucky winner.
Stay warm, stay well and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
