Who doesn’t remember an old English nursery rhyme about a butcher, a baker and a candlestick maker — three men who set out to sea? And, then there is the modern-day version. A Grosse Ile man who has literally embodied all three careers successfully, including the part about sailing.
At his age — he will be 71 in June — George Honer should be hitting the links, hoisting a sail, and continuing his travels around the world. Instead, beginning on the Friday after Ash Wednesday and ending on the Friday before Easter, he runs a tight ship with more than 100 volunteers to put on the Knights of Columbus Sacred Heart Council No. 13475 Lenten Fish Dinners. And do not think for one minute it is “just a fish fry.” Nearly 500 hungry in-house diners each week and a growing number of individuals who prefer take-outs have given this event a giant seal of approval.
